Zagreb – Split highway, 380 km long, was officially put into operation yesterday. It will connect north and south Croatia.
Croatia intended to build Zagreb - Split highway back in 1971, but, until 1990’s, only 39 km of road, from Zagreb to Karlovac, was completed, whereas in 1993, during the war, the first Croatian president Franjo Tuđman laid the cornerstone for tunnel Sveti Rok on Velebit, which was completed in 1999. Government led by Ivica Račan made the decision in 2001 on financing of construction of highway and set the terms. In 2001, 18 km of highway was put into operation, in 2003 – 108 km, and in 2004 – 177 km of highway.
