Music company Warner/Chappel lost at the court copyrights for a song which is sung for birthdays in entire world. The company bought the rights in 1988 and it is believed that since then it has been earning two million dollars per year from using the song in films, TV shows, advertising or another public performance.
Yesterday, it was finally decided that no one is allowed to ask for copyright for this song, its text or any of its arrangements. Based on the verdict, a group of artists and movie associates is now claiming compensation from Warner/Chappel for previous payments.
The original title of the song was "Good Morning To All" and was written by sisters Mildred and Patty Hill from Kentucky in 1893.
