Sweden builds 70-meter underground bypass

The biggest Swiss construction company Implenia is going to build the first stretch of the bypass around Stockholm, valued at CHF 235 million, Implenia said in a release.

This is the first such contract Implenia has won in Sweden, and it is made possible by the acquisition of construction activities of the German group Bilfinger late last year, the Swiss daily 20 Minutes reports.

The same source reminds that the Swiss company made that acquisition in a bid to expand its operations to Germany and Sweden. Implenia already operates in Norway, and it also formed a special division specialized for activities in Scandinavia.

According to the contract, Implenia will build a two-piece tunnel 7.2 kilometers long with three lanes in each direction, accompanying ramps and all necessary electrical installations.

This is the first out of six contracts regulating the construction of bypass around the Swedish capital, which will be 21 kilometers long, 17 kilometers of which will be built under the ground, at a depth of up to 70 meters. A total value of this investment is about CHF 3.1 billion.
