"U.S. Steel" in Smederevo modernizes high furnace number 2

The last preparations for beginning of modernization of high furnace number 2 are underway in company "U.S. Steel" Serbia in Smederevo. This furnace was put into operation in 1987. Production in that unit will be stopped until September 1st.

The Manager of the repair team, Jovica Dobrić, stated for the bulletin of the Smederevo company "Steel Monthly" that 500 workers would be working for 78 working days on the repair and modernization of high furnace number 2 and that the main contractor was company "Termostav-mraz" from Slovakia.

- The plan is that all damages on the steel covering be fixed, from the base to the top of the furnace - said Dobrić.

General Manager of "U.S. Steel" Serbia, Douglas Mathews said recently that more than 200m USD had been invested in the modernization of metal-processing units in that company in the previous four years with the aim of growth of steel production to 2.2m tons a year.
