Great Wall of China disappearing - People sell stone material or use it to build houses

About 30% of the Great Wall of China, that is, 1962 kilometers of this structure, have disappeared because local population is selling stone materials from the wall or using them to build houses.

According to the official study published in the Chinese press, the Great Wall of China, which took more than 2,000 years to build, has lost nearly 30% of its length and is not visible from the space any more because locals use bricks, stone materials and tiles from the wall to build houses.

The study by the China Agency for State Property Protection reads that 1962 kilometers of the wall have gone and that 1,200 kilometers of this monumental cultural and historical structure about 9,000 km long are in a very bad condition.

A large inflow of tourists has also contributed to the degradation of this monument, the study stresses.

Fines for stealing the building materials from the Great Wall are quite big, reaching up to 1,000 euro, the daily Figaro reports.

The Great Wall of China has not finished yet. It was built in different periods of time, starting from the third century before Christ.
