Under the Serbia-Bosnia and Herzegovina cross-border cooperation programme, the European Union officially invited applications for project funding under the IPA on Wednesday (6 May 2015) in a bid to improve the flood protection system in these countries.

- For this purpose, the European Union has set aside EUR 3.6 million - Srdjan Majstorovic, the deputy director of the Serbian government's EU Integration Office, said at last week's conference in Belgrade and added that the deadline to submit applications was July 20.

Majstorovic noted that the EU had financed 36 projects in Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina with 72 users to date, adding that most of them were environmental protection and tourism projects.

Oscar Benedict, the deputy head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, assessed that it was very important to reinforce the flood protection system in Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Floods in May 2014 helped identify numerous weaknesses on the local level, Benedict pointed out and added that a better civil protection and data exchange system was necessary.

Meetings at which institutions in Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina will be introduced to all the details of this financial assistance from the EU will be held in Valjevo, Srebrenica, Sabac and Brcko.
