The project which comprises usage of bacteria programmed to allocate and eliminate liver tumor cells was presented at the latest Ted conference in Vancouver.

Tal Danino, a researcher from the Technological Institute at Massachusetts outlined that experiments have been conducted so far only on mice who were fed with reprogrammed bacteria, like probiotic cultures which can be found in yoghurt.

When you encounter tumor cell, bacteria produces certain enzymes which change urine color.

- Liver cancer cells are hard to spot and this type of technology was really necessary – Danino says.

This invention proved to be pretty reliable and in the future it could be used for registering other types of cancer.

According to the data of WHO, liver cancer is second cause of death – 2012, the decease ended up with 745.000 death outcomes.

Research results will be published at "Science Translational Medicine" magazine.
