EU finances reconstruction of remote heating system in Užice – donation of 3.7m EUR

European Union provided donation of 3.7m EUR for the project for reconstruction and modernization of remote heating system in Užice, of which realization started with yesterday’s (June 5, 2007) signing of the memorandum between European Agency for Reconstruction, Town Hall of Užice and Public Company "Toplota".
Mayor of Užice, Tihomir Petković, said that the funds from the donation of EU would enable reconstruction of four city boiler rooms, broadening of heating pipeline in settlement Krčagovo, modernization of heating substations and remote management of heating system, which should contribute, in addition to saving of fuels, to reduction of air pollution in the city.
The Head of the operations in European Agency for Reconstruction and Development, Hristos Gofas, announced that EU had invested few billion USD in various projects in Serbia since 2001, about 450m EUR of which had gone to the energy sector, with the intention for adaptation of Serbia to the standards of EU.
Besides Užice, municipalities of Čačak, Subotica, Pančevo and Valjevo are also included in the project for reconstruction and modernization of remote heating system, which is backed by EU.
