The manufacturer of chocolate bars "Mars" apologized on Sunday (May 20, 2007) for the decision to use groceries of animal origin in its chocolate bars and promised that these candies will also be suitable for vegetarians in the future.
The company announced that it had withdrawn last-week decision to include rennet, the natural enzyme that can be found in the stomach of the calf and is traditionally used in production of cheese and chocolates, in the recipe. The change of recipe enraged vegetarians and 40 representatives of British Parliament signed the protest petition.
- It has become very, very clear that we had made a mistake – said Fiona Doson, the Manager of company "Mars" in Great Britain.
- There are three million vegetarians living in Great Britain and not only that we disappointed them, but we also disturbed other consumers – the company stated in its announcement and admitted that they had obtained more than 6,000 protest calls and e-mail messages.
