Serbia not to amend law forbidding GMO growing

Serbia's Agriculture Ministry is not thinking about amending legislation governing GMO production and sales, Agriculture Minister Snezana Bogosavljevic Boskovic says to the daily Blic. She stresses that Serbia currently has a law forbidding the growing of genetically modified organisms (GMO) and their putting on the market.

- No genetically modified live organism or its product can be put on the market, that is, grown for commercial purpose, or imported to Serbia - the minister explains.

GMO sales, with a clear product declaration, is one of the preconditions for joining the World Trade Organization.

- In case an initiative is launched for changing aforementioned legislation, both expert and general public will ve involved in the preparation of amendments and health safety of the population will be made an absolute priority - Snezana Bogosavljevic Boskovic points out.
